\frac{x\left(a-1\right)}{a-1}-\frac{y}{a-1}
To add or subtract expressions, expand them to make their denominators the same. Multiply x times \frac{a-1}{a-1}.
\frac{x\left(a-1\right)-y}{a-1}
Since \frac{x\left(a-1\right)}{a-1} and \frac{y}{a-1} have the same denominator, subtract them by subtracting their numerators.
\frac{xa-x-y}{a-1}
Do the multiplications in x\left(a-1\right)-y.
