\frac{ax}{x}+\frac{a}{x}
To add or subtract expressions, expand them to make their denominators the same. Multiply a times \frac{x}{x}.
\frac{ax+a}{x}
Since \frac{ax}{x} and \frac{a}{x} have the same denominator, add them by adding their numerators.
