To solve a pair of equations using substitution, first solve one of the equations for one of the variables. Then substitute the result for that variable in the other equation.
3y+2a=2
Pick one of the two equations which is more simple to solve for y by isolating y on the left hand side of the equal sign.
3y=2-2a
Subtract 2a from both sides of the equation.
y=\frac{2-2a}{3}
Divide both sides by 3.
3\times \frac{2-2a}{3}-4x=8
Substitute \frac{2-2a}{3} for y in the other equation, 3y-4x=8.
2-2a-4x=8
Multiply 3 times \frac{2-2a}{3}.
-4x=2a+6
Subtract 2-2a from both sides of the equation.
x=\frac{-a-3}{2}
Divide both sides by -4.
y=\frac{2-2a}{3},x=\frac{-a-3}{2}
The system is now solved.
