Consider the second equation. Subtract a from both sides.

Consider the first equation. Subtract 8y from both sides.
2x=4-a,x-8y=0
To solve a pair of equations using substitution, first solve one of the equations for one of the variables. Then substitute the result for that variable in the other equation.
2x=4-a
Pick one of the two equations which is more simple to solve for x by isolating x on the left hand side of the equal sign.
x=-\frac{a}{2}+2
Divide both sides by 2.
-\frac{a}{2}+2-8y=0
Substitute -\frac{a}{2}+2 for x in the other equation, x-8y=0.
-8y=\frac{a}{2}-2
Subtract -\frac{a}{2}+2 from both sides of the equation.
y=-\frac{a}{16}+\frac{1}{4}
Divide both sides by -8.
x=-\frac{a}{2}+2,y=-\frac{a}{16}+\frac{1}{4}
The system is now solved.
