To solve a pair of equations using substitution, first solve one of the equations for one of the variables. Then substitute the result for that variable in the other equation.
y+X=32
Pick one of the two equations which is more simple to solve for y by isolating y on the left hand side of the equal sign.
y=32-X
Subtract X from both sides of the equation.
0.16\left(32-X\right)+0.08x=4.8
Substitute 32-X for y in the other equation, 0.16y+0.08x=4.8.
\frac{128-4X}{25}+0.08x=4.8
Multiply 0.16 times 32-X.
0.08x=\frac{4X-8}{25}
Subtract \frac{128-4X}{25} from both sides of the equation.
x=2X-4
Divide both sides of the equation by 0.08, which is the same as multiplying both sides by the reciprocal of the fraction.
y=32-X,x=2X-4
The system is now solved.
