Use the distributive property to multiply x+1 by 7.

Use the distributive property to multiply x-1 by 5.
7x+7-5x=-5
Subtract 5x from both sides.
2x+7=-5
Combine 7x and -5x to get 2x.
2x=-5-7
Subtract 7 from both sides.
2x=-12
Subtract 7 from -5 to get -12.
x=\frac{-12}{2}
Divide both sides by 2.
