Swap sides so that all variable terms are on the left hand side.
ax=y-b^{2}
Subtract b^{2} from both sides.
xa=y-b^{2}
The equation is in standard form.
\frac{xa}{x}=\frac{y-b^{2}}{x}
Divide both sides by x.
a=\frac{y-b^{2}}{x}
