To find the opposite of x+1, find the opposite of each term.
-x-1=y
Swap sides so that all variable terms are on the left hand side.
-x=y+1
Add 1 to both sides.
\frac{-x}{-1}=\frac{y+1}{-1}
Divide both sides by -1.
x=\frac{y+1}{-1}
Dividing by -1 undoes the multiplication by -1.
x=-\left(y+1\right)
Divide y+1 by -1.
